The part of mathematics that cannot be reduced to steps
SUMOP's essays are older than the newest model releases, but their central question remains current: what is lost when mathematical activity is reduced to producing a sequence of symbols? The project contrasts language-model pattern matching with human activities such as forming concepts, testing ideas against the world, and deciding which question is worth asking.
Why include an older source?
A news feed should not become a stream of product announcements. Historical and critical writing gives teachers a vocabulary for discussing reliability, learning, and the difference between a correct procedure and a useful model.
A balanced workflow
Use a symbolic engine for exact procedures, a language model for dialogue and examples, and a human learner for interpretation and judgment. The combination is strongest when each component has a clear job.
